Historical and touristic places in the region that you can enjoy visiting;
Kantara Castle is the described as the most romantic of all the Byzantine or Crusader trio castles. It is the easternmost and lowest one poised at the spot where the Kyrenia range subsides into rolling hills.
The Castle was built on a steep rock at a height of 700 meters dominating the surrounding plains, built in the 10th century for surveillance purposes. Due to its position it was used as a beacon station to communicate with Buffavento and St Hilarion to the west. Kantara is reckoned to be the place where Isaac Komnenos surrendered to Richard the Lionheart in 1191, like Buffavento and St Hilarion. After the Genoese and Venetian invasions, the castle was partially dismantled and its significance faded.
The Apostolos Andreas Monastery, an important place of worship for the global Orthodox community is situated almost at the end of the Karpaz peninsula. It is named after St Andrew, who was a follower of John the Baptist, and was the first to be called by Jesus Christ to spread Christianity.
According to the legend the monastery was founded here, as during a journey to Palestine, the ship transporting Andrew went off course and struck the rocks here. Safely arriving at the shore, Andrew struck the rocks with his staff, where a spring gushed forth. The waters allegedly proved to have healing powers, and restored the sight of the ship’s captain who had been blind in one eye. Thereafter, the site became a place of pilgrimage. Mass pilgrimage, however, is only comparatively recent, dating back to the early years of the 20th century. Today, the monastery is considered holy for both Muslims and Christians due to the spring on the sea side of the Monastery, believed to be a holy healing water. Renovation works of the monastery have been nearly completed.
This completely natural beach, consisting of fine golden sand stretching for kilometers, is famous for its calmness. Golden Beach is the star among the beaches at the south of the Karpaz peninsula, fringed with magnificent sand dunes and populated by North Cyprus breeding sea turtles. It is a magical place to visit, but keep in mind not to disturb the turtles in any way as they are a protected species.
The church features the traces of the Byzantine until today, even though it has been demolished and rebuilt many times. The last church built on the grounds with a multi-domed structure was completed in the 14th century. The mosaics depicting Jesus sitting on the lap of the Virgin Mary, the five angels and apostles around them are among significant examples of ancient Byzantine art adorning the inner walls.
The church is named after St. Philo, who converted the people of the area to Christianity.
The typically domed Byzantine church was built in the 10th Century, on top of a much earlier, possibly 5th Century, basilica. It is virtually all that remains of the ancient Phoenician port of Karpasia. The port founded by King Pygmalion of Cyprus, was a flourishing trading port, half way between Salamis and Anatolia. It was abandoned in 802, after Arab raiders burnt and destroyed it to the ground and its inhabitants moved inland, founding Dipkarpaz.
The beach and the restaurant at Agios Philon are very popular among locals and tourists visiting the region.
In the second century BC, Aphendrika was one of the six most important cities in Cyprus, much larger than Karpasia. Much has still to be excavated as many places in North Cyprus, so that the remains to be seen today are only those of the three churches Agios Georgios, Panagia Chrysiotissa beyond and Panagia Asomatos on the right.
